Android 12 upgrade

The Material You interface, which Google calls it, was one of the features we particularly loved in our Google Pixel 6 Pro review. However, you won't need to buy Google's flagship or wait for Android 13 to acquire it because it will soon be available on most Android phones.

Most Android 12 phones will get Material You for free, according to Engadget, including devices from Samsung (likely including the upcoming Samsung Galaxy S22 and Galaxy S22 Ultra), OnePlus, Oppo, Vivo, Realme, Xiaomi, and others.

Material You is a clever reference to Android's Material Design redesign seven years ago, which makes it much more, well, you. It's fantastic to see that it'll be available on the majority of Android 12 devices.

MAKE YOUR ANDROID PHONE MORE YOU

The concept behind Material You is simple: rather than Google dictating your style and colour preferences, you choose your own theme, which will be carried across all of your Google products. Many of Google's products have already been upgraded to Material You, but the Pixel and a few Samsung smartphones – including the Samsung Galaxy S22 – were the first to get it. Material You will now be available on many of the greatest Android phones from Samsung, OnePlus, Oppo, Vivo, Realme, and Xiaomi. What you get will be determined by the manufacturers: some will leave it as-is, while others will wish to customize it.

We don't have particular dates for the rollouts yet, but they're scheduled to arrive in the coming weeks and months, so you shouldn't have to wait too long if your Android 12-compatible phone doesn't have it yet.
