At the touch of a button, this OLED 4K TV transforms from flat to curved.

The Skyworth W82 has a great party trick and still remembers important features like 4K 120Hz support and Dolby Vision.

OLED 4K TV

Remember when curved TVs were all the rage, and then they weren't, because people realised that flat TVs work better in most living rooms? The Skyworth W82, on the other hand, is an OLED that wants to give you the best of both worlds by allowing you to change it from flat to curved – and even with different levels of curvature – with a quick push of the remote.

This approach appeals to me because curved screens aren't inherently bad – it all depends on how you use them. They're ideal for viewing from a central position by one or two people, as the curve makes every edge more comfortable for your eye to flick over and view. This is why curved gaming monitors for PCs are so popular – they are ideal for this application.

However, in a family room, people may be viewing the TV from a variety of odd angles, and a curved TV simply makes life more difficult in that regard.

So now we're here. Sitting in your living room and yearning for a massive curved-screen movie experience similar to that of an IMAX screen? Go crazy. When the kids arrive, flatten the TV so that everyone can watch together.

The curve options for the W82 include going to 1500R (which Skyworth says is ideal for gaming, and the TV will actually switch to this mode when you fire up a console, if you want), and 1000R, which is the same curvature as the human eye and is great for completely immersing yourself.

The back of the TV is divided into panels inspired by how fish scales work, which is a very cool sentence.

You get Dolby Vision HDR support, as well as 4K 120Hz support over HDMI 2.1, so it's built for gaming.

The 2.1 sound system appears to be quite impressive as well, with the built-in subwoofer reaching down to 50Hz, so you should get a lot more thump than most TVs provide. Dolby Atmos is supported. To be honest, I can't imagine not pairing this with one of the best soundbars for a full Dolby Atmos effect, but the sound is still good if you don't.

It also has a built-in webcam, which I'm not sure people are willing to accept in their TVs, no matter how many TV manufacturers try to include them.

The Skyworth W82 costs CNY 29,999 (approximately $4,700), but we don't know if it will be available outside of China.
