This Oppo Find X5 review is for anyone looking for one of the best Android phones but isn't interested in paying top dollar for it. It's a more modest flagship, but it's still a flagship.

The Oppo Find X5 sits in the middle of the series, between the more expensive Oppo Find X5 Pro and the less expensive Oppo Find X5 Lite and offers the best of both worlds, combining a reasonable price with impressive specs and up-to-date features.

The Oppo Find X5 Pro has it all, having received a resounding 5-star rating in its infospa review. Its camera system was the standout feature for me, but it also has a 6.7-inch QHD+ screen, a seriously long battery life, and insanely fast charging. However, not everyone will be willing to spend such a hefty sum on it, in which case, could the Oppo Find X5 be the next best thing? You've come to the right place if you want to find out.

OPPO FIND X5 REVIEW: PRICE AND WHAT’S DIFFERENT

The Oppo Find X5 is available in the UK for £749 right now. Check out the widgets to see where you can get one.

This phone will not be available in the United States, and we have yet to learn whether it will be available in Australia.

If you're debating whether to buy this or the Oppo Find X5 Pro, there are a few key differences to be aware of. The Oppo Find X5, for starters, has a smaller 6.55-inch FHD+ display and much more manageable dimensions. While both have a refresh rate of 120Hz, only the Pro model is an LPTO panel, which means it can be reduced to as low as 1Hz to save battery life.

The Oppo Find X5 is not officially waterproof or dustproof, in contrast to the Oppo Find X5, which is rated IP68 and can be submerged in up to 1.5m of water for 30 minutes.

The Oppo Find X5 Pro has slightly better performance thanks to its Snapdragon 8 Gen 1 processor, which is paired with 12GB of RAM. In comparison, the Oppo Find X5 uses a Snapdragon 888 from last year with only 8GB of RAM. There's also a smaller 4,800mAh battery here, but both phones support 80W SuperVOOC charging. The cameras on both phones are the same, though the X5 Pro has a slightly more sophisticated 5-axis stabiliser. The biggest, and arguably most important, distinction is a cost. The Oppo Find X5 is £300 less expensive than the Oppo Find X5 Pro, which costs £1,049 in total.

OPPO FIND X5 REVIEW: DESIGN AND DISPLAY

From the front, the Oppo Find X5 appears to be a smaller version of the phone's Pro model. The handset's curved display wraps around the edges, with a discreet hole-punch style camera in the top left corner.

When you flip it over, you won't find the same sleek ceramic design with an integrated camera module. Instead, the glass back resembles rubber, with an aluminium frame framing the camera notch. It feels less premium, but it's also a little more durable, and it won't attract dirty fingerprints. To protect it, a protective case is included in the box.

A metallic edge surrounds the phone, which has a USB-C charging port, a volume rocker on the left side, and a power button on the right.

With dimensions of 160.3 x 72.6 x 8.7mm and a weight of 196g, the Oppo Find X5 fits comfortably in the palm of your hand. It's not too large, and it won't be difficult to slip into your trouser pocket. Using the fingerprint scanner to unlock the display is also a breeze; it's well-positioned and quick. If you prefer, you will also be able to use facial recognition.

The 6.55-inch FHD+ AMOLED display isn't as eye-catching as the X5 Pro's, but it still looks fantastic and is certainly worthy of a flagship phone. It has a 10-bit colour depth and is vibrant and lively, with sharp details and plenty of brightness. You'll be able to watch TV shows and movies, as well as edit photos and play mobile games, with ease.

The Oppo Find X5's 120Hz refresh rate ensures a smooth experience, though it's a shame it's not LPTO because it won't be able to drop down to as little as 1Hz to conserve battery life - it only goes down to 60Hz.

OPPO FIND X5 REVIEW: CAMERA SYSTEM

The Oppo Find X5's camera system is its strongest suit. On the back, there's a 50MP main camera, a 50MP ultra-wide-angle camera, and a 13MP telephoto camera, with a 32MP selfie camera on the front. Oppo collaborated with Hasselblad to develop the software, so you'd expect big things from this phone, and it doesn't disappoint.

The Oppo Find X5 captures realistic, detailed shots with its default point-and-shoot settings. The colours were vibrant but not overpowering, and the photos were impressive regardless of the subject. On a cloudy day, I tested the camera and it did occasionally struggle to balance light and dark areas of the shot, indicating some issues with the Auto HDR, but it wasn't always a problem, so don't let that put you off. View the Gallery below to see some sample images from the Oppo Find X5.

The automatic Night mode takes a few seconds to capture the photo, but once it does, you'll get a clear, precise image that adequately illuminates the scene. You'll be able to take good photos at any time of day.

The optical zoom on the telephoto lens is 2x, while the digital zoom can go up to 20x. Other 2022 flagships, such as the Huawei P50 Pro and the Samsung Galaxy S22 Ultra, have up to 100x zoom, so this meagre 20x zoom won't blow you away. Even at 10x zoom, there was a noticeable graininess to the image.

OPPO FIND X5 REVIEW: BATTERY AND PERFORMANCE

This phone, which is powered by the Qualcomm Snapdragon 888 processor, the Adreno 660 GPU, 8GB of RAM, and 256GB of storage, isn't the most powerful, but that doesn't mean it's lacking in that department. It handled almost everything I threw at it, including more demanding mobile games like PUBG Mobile, which comes pre-installed on the device.

The Oppo Find X5 scored 782 in single-core and 3,394 in multi-core on the Geekbench 5 benchmarking test, which isn't far behind the Oppo Find X5 Pro and places it just below other flagships like the OnePlus 10 Pro. It easily outperforms some similarly priced competitors, such as the Google Pixel 6 Pro and the Samsung Galaxy S21 FE.

As expected, the Oppo Find X5 includes 5G support and Wi-Fi 6, ensuring that you have the fastest connection speeds wherever you go (as long as your network is set up for it that is).

The 4,800mAh battery did an excellent job of keeping me going throughout the day, and it even lasted well into the next. I ran a local video on full brightness for two hours to compare it to other phones on the market. The battery percentage dropped by 10% during that time, implying that it would have lasted a total of 20 hours, which is excellent. Then, using the included 80W SUPERVOOC charger, it took me about 34 minutes to get a full charge. If you have a compatible charging kit, you can also charge the Oppo Find X5 wirelessly.

The Oppo Find X5 runs ColorOS 12.1, which is based on Android 12. It's a good Android operating system that isn't as cartoonish or over-the-top as some others. There are numerous options for customising the phone, including some really cool always-on display designs and animated wallpapers.

My main issue with the OS is how many useless apps come pre-installed, such as O Relax, Tile Master 3D, and even TikTok. I'd rather pick and choose my own apps from the Google Play Store than have to go through and delete the ones I don't want.

OPPO FIND X5 REVIEW: VERDICT

The Oppo Find X5 is a fantastic phone with a lot to offer across the board, but it excels at photography thanks to its advanced three-lens camera system. Along with that, you get a sleek curved screen and a massive battery life with super-fast charging, so you'll never run out of juice again. The back design isn't going to wow anyone, but most people will cover it up with a case anyway.

I would definitely recommend the Oppo Find X5, and I believe it's a better buy than the Pro model if you don't need such a large screen, don't mind sacrificing a little display quality, and aren't concerned about your next phone being waterproof.
