TikTok, the parent company of the popular short video sharing platform, Bytedance, is looking for a new partnership to mark its return to India. TikTok, along with over 250 other apps, was banned in India in 2020, including popular apps such as PUBG Mobile, Alibaba, and others.

Krafton announced Battlegrounds Mobile India (BGMI) as the replacement for PUBG Mobile in India in May 2021. Bytedance is now looking to relaunch the popular TikTok app in India through a new partnership, as well as rehire former employees and re-enter the market. Let's go over the specifics.

TikTok May Comeback India Soon With New Branding?

According to an Economic Times report, Bytedance is in preliminary talks with Hiranandani Group about a partnership in India. Hiranandani Group is based in Mumbai and is one of India's largest real estate developers, with projects in Mumbai, Bangalore, and Chennai. The real estate behemoth also runs data centre operations through Yotta Infrastructure Solutions and has recently launched a consumer services arm, Tez Platforms, in which it expects to invest up to Rs 3,500 crore over the next two to three years.

According to the report, talks between Bytedance and Hiranandani Group are in the early stages, and union government officials have been briefed on the plans informally. "There have been no formal talks with us yet," a senior government official confirmed to ET. We have, however, been informed of the plans. We will review their request as they come to us for approvals."

Furthermore, if the talks between these two companies progress, possible collaborations include working with Hiranandani's consumer technology business Tez Platforms or storing data at the group's Yotta Infrastructure data centres. According to the report, Bytedance is also actively recruiting for new positions in India.

If the app ever returns to India, it must adhere to the rules established by the Indian government. All critical user data must be stored in India rather than outside the country. TikTok will have to follow suit if it wants to make a comeback. For example, PUBG Mobile may be launched in India under a different name than TikTok. This also implies that there may be a new branding to begin with.

Furthermore, according to the report, ByteDance's legal head Gautam Vohra, who left the company in August 2021, returned earlier this year as Head of Legal, South Asia, and Regional Counsel, Middle East.

Even if the app is relaunched in India, it will be up against apps like Instagram (Reels), YouTube (Shorts), Snapchat, Chingari, ShareChat, MX Takatak, Moj, Josh, and others. However, it is worth noting that no clone or competition has been able to match TikTok's popularity in the last two years.
